Former National Conciliator Returns to Role Temporarily in Iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland – Aðalsteinn Leifsson, who previously served as Iceland's national conciliator from 2020 to 2023, is set to temporarily step back into the role. He will be covering for the current national conciliator, Ástráður Haraldsson, for a few days while Haraldsson attends an international meeting abroad.

Haraldsson confirmed Leifsson's temporary appointment in an interview with mbl.is, stating that Leifsson will act as an assistant conciliator during this period. The need for this temporary arrangement arises because Haraldsson is traveling to attend a biennial consultation meeting for Nordic national conciliators.

"He is, of course, a seasoned professional, knows everything, and will jump right into it," Haraldsson said of Leifsson, expressing confidence in his predecessor's ability to handle the responsibilities seamlessly. Leifsson's familiarity with the role and the ongoing labor disputes is expected to ensure a smooth transition during Haraldsson's brief absence.

The specific labor dispute Leifsson will be assisting with involves Icelandair and the Icelandic Airline Pilots' Association (FÍA). His return, even temporarily, underscores the importance of experienced mediators in navigating complex labor negotiations.
