Former NHLer Todd Warriner named interim head coach of Windsor women's hockey

Todd Warriner, a former National Hockey League player, has been named the interim head coach for the University of Windsor's women's hockey team. Warriner, originally from Blenheim, Ontario, steps into the role after Deanna Iwanicka's departure in April, following her eight seasons with the Lancers.

Warriner brings a wealth of experience to the position. He was the fourth overall pick in the 1992 NHL draft by the Quebec Nordiques. Over a 14-year professional career, the left-winger played nearly 500 games for teams including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning, Phoenix Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, and Nashville Predators. He also represented Canada, helping the national team secure a silver medal at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.

His experience at the highest levels of hockey, including his skill development knowledge and his understanding of what it takes to build a successful culture will be invaluable to our student-athletes.

Most recently, the 52-year-old coached in Germany's professional leagues for the past two seasons. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach for the University of Windsor's men's team from 2019 to 2023. His familiarity with the Lancer programs is expected to be beneficial.

Stephanie White, Windsor's director of athletics, expressed confidence in Warriner's appointment. "His coaching experience, as well as his knowledge of our Lancer programs will allow him to positively impact our women’s hockey program both on and off the ice."

Warriner is set to oversee player development, game preparation, and daily team operations as the women's team gears up for the 2026-27 season. "I am really excited for the opportunity to get to work with this talented group of student-athletes and to help continue to move this program forward," Warriner said.
