Former President Shahabuddin resigns, retains benefits

Former President Mohammed Shahabuddin has officially resigned from his post, leaving Bangabhaban two days after stepping down. He is set to receive a range of benefits and protections as stipulated by law, according to Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

The Special Security Force (SSF) and the President Guard Regiment (PGR) will provide security for Shahabuddin for a period of six months. Additionally, police and other law enforcement agencies will ensure his safety in accordance with legal provisions.

The President's Pension, Gratuity and Other Benefits Act, 2016, grants former presidents who resign after serving at least six months a lifetime pension equivalent to 75 percent of their last basic salary. Based on the current presidential salary of Tk 1.2 lakh per month, Shahabuddin is eligible for a monthly pension of Tk 90,000, or he can opt for a one-time gratuity payment.

Further entitlements include a personal assistant, an attendant, an annual official expense allowance, medical facilities comparable to a cabinet minister's, government vehicles for official use, a diplomatic passport, a telephone connection with government-approved bill exemptions, and free accommodation at government circuit houses and rest houses during domestic travel. His spouse will also receive medical facilities, a diplomatic passport, and free accommodation.

However, these benefits are subject to withdrawal under specific conditions. These include accepting another office with salary or benefits from the Consolidated Fund, being convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude, or being declared by the higher judiciary to have assumed the presidency through unconstitutional or unlawful means.
