Former RCMP officer alleges racial profiling by Quebec police in complaints

A Black former RCMP officer alleges he was racially profiled and unlawfully detained by Quebec police. Maurice Carvery filed complaints against the provincial police and Longueuil police, seeking an investigation from the domestic security minister.

He walked in a very deliberate manner straight towards me, ignoring anything that may have may or may not have been going around in his peripheral or his periphery.

The incident occurred on July 24 when Carvery was in Montreal. He states an officer approached him outside a Longueuil restaurant, demanding identification without initial cause. Carvery refused, and more officers arrived, surrounding him. He felt the situation was escalating rapidly and that officers were not de-escalating.

In my mind, I took a mental note: this is going sideways very fast, and they’re not de-escalating at all, despite the fact that I made every effort within my ability to de-escalate.

Carvery alleges an officer pointed a taser at him despite him offering no resistance. He claims officers then tackled him, handcuffed him, and threw him to the ground. He was released only after his friend informed the officers they were former RCMP members. Carvery also alleges an officer deleted parts of videos he had recorded during the interaction.

A video reviewed by The Canadian Press shows Carvery speaking calmly to police while in handcuffs. The complaint highlights concerns about the conduct of Quebec police services and calls for a thorough investigation into the alleged racial profiling and mistreatment.
