Manitoba RCMP investigating death of 4-year-old girl, injuries to 2 toddlers

Manitoba RCMP have taken over the investigation into the death of a four-year-old girl, which is being treated as suspicious. The provincial police force was called to a home on Long Plain First Nation after an initial response by the Manitoba First Nations Police Service to a report of a child in medical distress.

Officers arrived at the residence, located more than 110 kilometers outside of Winnipeg, around 7:45 a.m. on Sunday. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the four-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Police stated that the circumstances surrounding her death are suspicious.

Two other young girls, aged one and two, were also present in the home and were transported to hospital due to their conditions. One of the toddlers was in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital, but both are now reported to be in stable condition. The Major Crime Services unit of the RCMP has been brought in to assist with the investigation due to the suspicious nature of the death and the serious injuries to the other children.

Superintendent Rob Lasson, who leads the Major Crime Services, described the events as "troubling" and acknowledged that the community will be seeking answers. His team, along with forensic identification services and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, will manage the ongoing investigation.
