Former Tax Official to Stand Trial Over Alleged Tk 6.67 Crore Corruption

A former member of Bangladesh's National Board of Revenue (NBR), Matiur Rahman, will stand trial on corruption charges. A Dhaka court has framed charges against him for allegedly concealing assets worth Tk 1.27 crore and accumulating Tk 5.4 crore through illegal means.

Rahman, who is currently incarcerated, appeared before the Divisional Special Judge's Court and pleaded not guilty. The charges were read out by Judge BM Tarikul Kabir. The court has scheduled September 14 for the recording of testimony from prosecution witnesses.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) initiated the case on December 15, 2024, and submitted its charge sheet on February 3 of this year. Rahman was apprehended by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on January 15, 2025, at the Bashundhara Residential Area. At the time of his arrest, he held the position of president of the NBR's Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal.

Rahman first drew public attention in June 2024 when a video of his son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, purchasing a goat for Tk 15 lakh before Eid went viral on social media. This incident sparked widespread media reports detailing the family's alleged ownership of expensive watches, luxury cars, and substantial property holdings. According to ACC lawyers, two additional corruption cases involving Rahman are currently under investigation.
