Former Uruguay President Lacalle Pou: 'Our Government Was Profoundly Humanist'

Former Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou declared his administration, which served from 2020 to 2025, was "profoundly humanist." He made these remarks during a celebration marking the 190th anniversary of the opposition National Party, where he was met with enthusiastic cheers from party militants.

Lacalle Pou stated that his government's ultimate goal was always the well-being of every Uruguayan. Reflecting on his term, he expressed a sense of calm and satisfaction, while acknowledging that perfection is elusive. "We had successes and, like all human endeavors, I had errors. But the ultimate goal was always the well-being of all and each of our compatriots," he said.

Addressing the crowd, the former president described the presidency as the greatest honor for a public servant. He affirmed his current role as a dedicated party militant, content to be among his political base. He also highlighted the ongoing work of the National Party, which currently holds power, commending the efforts of mayors, council members, and legislators.

Lacalle Pou reiterated a guiding principle he has often used: "One must be firm with ideas and gentle with people." He argued that resorting to insults indicates an inability to defend one's ideas and stressed that unity cannot be achieved through divisive tactics during an election campaign.
