Four suspects sent to court over alleged fraud targeting jailed journalist

Prosecutors in Bakırköy, Turkey, have launched an investigation into four individuals accused of defrauding people by promising to secure the release and acquittal of journalist Mehmet Akif Ersoy, who is currently detained.

The suspects, identified as lawyer Erel Muallaoğlu, Yavuz Küçükyeşil, Erkan Uzun, and Hacı Eşiyok, were taken into custody following a technically monitored operation where they were allegedly caught in the act.

Authorities have initiated proceedings against them under Article 158/2 of the Turkish Penal Code, which pertains to fraud committed by leveraging supposed connections with public officials. The group allegedly promised to expedite or influence legal outcomes in exchange for money.

The suspects have been presented to the Sulh Ceza Hâkimliği (Criminal Judgeship of Peace) with a request for their arrest, as their legal proceedings continue.
