Four-vehicle crash on Zhongshan Expressway leaves driver with severed limb

A severe four-vehicle collision on the northbound Zhongshan Expressway near Hsinchu, Taiwan, resulted in one driver sustaining a severed left thigh and requiring immediate hospitalization. The accident occurred around 3 p.m. on a busy section of the highway.

According to preliminary reports from the National Freeway Police, a 29-year-old driver named Gao was operating a small truck in the middle lane. He allegedly failed to observe the traffic ahead, leading to a collision with a passenger car driven by a 53-year-old man, also in the middle lane. This initial impact caused the first passenger car to overturn into the inner lane.

The overturned vehicle then collided with another passenger car driven by a 62-year-old man. Gao's truck continued its trajectory, subsequently crashing into a large truck driven by a 36-year-old man. The force of the collisions trapped Gao in his driver's seat, resulting in the severe injury to his left thigh.

Emergency services responded swiftly, extricating Gao and transporting him for urgent medical treatment. While Gao's condition is being assessed, the other drivers involved in the accident were found to have a blood alcohol content of zero. The freeway was cleared by 4:52 p.m., and the National Freeway Police are currently investigating the precise cause of the multi-vehicle pile-up.
