France fire kills three, investigation launched into multi-point blaze

A devastating fire swept through a house and an agricultural warehouse in Lhoumois, in France's western Deux-Sèvres department, on August 12, 2026, resulting in the deaths of three people. The blaze began near a roadside and quickly spread through surrounding vegetation, engulfing the structures.

Local mayor Jean Pillot told BFMTV that the fire's rapid progression might have prevented the victims from escaping. "With the heat, perhaps they had closed the shutters," he speculated, suggesting they may not have seen the flames approaching.

Emergency teams discovered two bodies, completely burned, inside the residence. A third victim was found shortly after. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed, but the house was reportedly occupied by a couple and their adult son.

Investigators are examining the circumstances of the fire, which reportedly started in multiple locations in a field before spreading to about 20 hectares. The presence of several initial ignition points has led authorities to consider the possibility that the fire was deliberately set, although this hypothesis has not been officially confirmed. Specialized teams from the National Gendarmerie's Criminal Research Institute have been deployed to assist in the investigation.
