France Reinforces Spain Border Amid Migrant Surge to Ceuta, Offers Aid

France is bolstering its border controls with Spain as a significant number of migrants arrive in the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. President Emmanuel Macron has directed the Interior Ministry to implement all necessary measures to strengthen the border.

Paris has also extended an offer of support to its neighbor, indicating a willingness to provide any necessary assistance to Spanish authorities, potentially through the European border and coast guard agency, Frontex, should Madrid request it. Government sources confirmed that contacts are ongoing with Spanish and Moroccan authorities to ensure thorough monitoring and enhance coordination among involved services.

These new reinforcement measures are in addition to those already in place since 2020. Those earlier actions included doubling security forces in the area and reforming the Schengen Code in 2024 to enhance border controls. Joint patrols and coordinated actions with Spanish authorities to combat illegal immigration have also been part of the ongoing strategy.

The French Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, had previously announced instructions to reinforce border controls "without delay" via social media. The French government's actions underscore the heightened attention on migration flows impacting Spain's borders and its commitment to collaborating with regional partners to manage the situation.
