France Wildfire Forces Evacuation of Over 220,000; Largest Blaze in History

Southwestern France is grappling with its largest wildfire since World War II, forcing the evacuation of over 220,000 people. The inferno, raging near the town of Lacanau, has compelled authorities to shut down a significant 60-kilometer section of the A63 highway, stretching from Bordeaux to the Spanish border. Train services south of Bordeaux have also been suspended.

Authorities have ordered an additional 50,000 people to leave villages surrounding Bordeaux as the flames advance. The total number evacuated due to this single fire now exceeds 220,000, with tens of thousands more displaced by other wildfires in France and central Spain. The scale of the disaster is immense, with the fire having consumed approximately 42,000 hectares of land.

Firefighting efforts are being bolstered by 1,500 soldiers who have joined hundreds of exhausted firefighters battling the flames for nearly a week. The intensity of the heat has reportedly created fire whirls, making the blaze "unpredictable and uncontrollable," according to Nicolas Braz, a fire chief involved in the operation.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that gaining control of the fire will be a protracted process. He warned that residents and tourists evacuated will not be able to return home until the situation is fully managed, highlighting the long road ahead for recovery and containment.
