Free performing arts criticism workshop opens registrations in Asunción

The Cultural Center of Spain Juan de Salazar (CCEJS) in Asunción has opened registration for a free workshop focused on performing arts criticism. The program, led by Spanish researcher and critic José Vicente Peiró Barco, is designed to equip participants with analytical tools for stage performances and create a platform for dialogue on cultural criticism.

This workshop is part of a series of academic activities organized by CCEJS in collaboration with the Faculty of Philosophy at the National University of Asunción. It seeks to foster reflection on the role of cultural criticism and encourage exchange among researchers, artists, educators, and students. The sessions are scheduled for August, with specific dates including Saturday, August 8th, and multiple sessions from August 19th to 22nd. The workshop will be held at the CCEJS headquarters.

Participation is free, but spaces are limited, requiring prior registration through a form available on the cultural center's website. The curriculum covers a range of topics, including the analysis of theatrical performances using the Pavis questionnaire, the history of stagecraft, the distinctions between criticism and analysis, academic versus journalistic criticism, the current state of criticism in Paraguay and Spain, and the relationship between critics and creators.

José Vicente Peiró Barco brings extensive academic and critical experience to the workshop. He holds a doctorate from the National University of Distance Education (UNED) and specializes in contemporary Paraguayan narrative. His work includes research, publications, and presentations at international conferences. Peiró also contributes as a performing arts critic for the newspaper Las Provincias and the magazine Red Escénica. He is a member of the Spanish Academy of Performing Arts and has served on juries for literary and theater awards.
