Frenchman Guerin takes lead in Volta a Portugal after winning queen stage

French cyclist Alexis Guerin claimed the leader's yellow jersey in the Volta a Portugal on Sunday, dominating the queen stage with a solo victory. Guerin, riding for Anicolor/Campicarn, crossed the finish line atop Alto da Torre in the Serra da Estrela, the highest point in Portugal, after 154.6 kilometers. He finished in 4 hours, nine minutes, and 49 seconds, distancing himself significantly from his rivals.

His teammate and two-time defending champion, Artem Nych of Russia, finished second, 1 minute and 44 seconds behind. Pedro Silva of Portugal secured third place, 1 minute and 56 seconds back. The Euskaltel-Euskadi team also showed strong performance, with Jokin Murguialday in fourth and Txomin Juaristi in eleventh, gaining ground in the overall standings.

Other notable riders in the top ten included Puerto Rican Abner González, who finished sixth, and Colombian Jesús David Peña, who came in tenth. Guerin's commanding performance allowed him to climb 22 places in the general classification, overtaking Rui Oliveira of UAE Team Emirates. Nych remains in second place, 1 minute and 26 seconds behind Guerin.

The race is set to continue on Monday with a 17.4-kilometer time trial from Anadia to Águeda, a crucial stage that could further shake up the general classification.
