From Green Tourism to Stadium Support: Kaohsiung City Cuts Carbon Emissions by Over 8,000 Tons Annually

Kaohsiung City has achieved a significant reduction in carbon emissions, cutting over 8,262 tons annually through a comprehensive suite of low-carbon initiatives. The city is actively promoting sustainable tourism and integrating environmental consciousness into popular events like concerts and sporting matches.

Key measures include collaborating with 10 international hotels, encompassing over 1,300 rooms, to reduce plastic waste and encourage sustainable water usage. By installing water filters and public water dispensers, the city aims to decrease reliance on single-use amenities and bottled water, contributing to a substantial reduction in plastic waste. These efforts are projected to eliminate 71.74 million single-use hotel amenities and 460,000 plastic water bottles annually.

The city is also extending its environmental campaign to the sports arena, partnering with the Taiwanese baseball team TSG Hawks. This collaboration involves introducing a reusable cup rental service at baseball games, which is estimated to eliminate 1,200 disposable cups per game, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 460 kilograms each match. The team has also launched a limited-edition eco-cup, encouraging fans to use refill stations for drinking water, thereby combining entertainment with environmental action.

To further engage the public, the Environmental Protection Bureau has invited "Yili," a member of the TSG Hawks cheerleading squad, to promote low-carbon living. Citizens are encouraged to adopt the "three environmental treasures", reusable cups, bags, and lunch boxes, for daily activities like shopping and dining. The bureau is also running a social media campaign, offering gift certificates to those who share their plastic reduction efforts online, urging everyone to join the movement towards a plastic-free lifestyle in Kaohsiung.
