From sales star to basketball coach: Wang Jian-wei debuts with Taiwan Beer

Wang Jian-wei, known as "Xiao Liu," has officially stepped into his new role as head coach for the Taiwan Beer basketball team, marking a significant transition for the franchise. After two consecutive seasons failing to reach the SBL championship finals, the team has placed its hopes in Wang, a former key member of Taiwan Beer's "Green Dynasty" era.

I had also been an assistant coach at Taiwan Beer for 7 or 8 years, and in recent years I would help the team find foreign players, so I have been paying attention to Taiwan Beer. This time, I just happened to have this opportunity, and I hope to show what I have accumulated in recent years.

Wang Jian-wei made his coaching debut at the Chang Yao Cup Future League Public Welfare Invitational Tournament. While his team secured a 77:66 victory against Taiwan University of Arts, Wang was critical of his own performance, giving himself a score of 70. He cited issues such as not paying enough attention to player Tian Hao's foul trouble and ongoing communication challenges with the players as areas needing improvement.

Having previously served as an assistant coach for seven to eight years and actively involved in scouting foreign players, Wang Jian-wei brings considerable experience back to the team. He spent the last five years focusing on the insurance industry, where he excelled as a "gold medal salesman," but has now returned to basketball. Wang expressed a mix of anticipation and nervousness about the new responsibility. His primary objective for the upcoming season is clear: reaching the championship finals is the minimum target, with the ultimate goal of winning the title. He believes the additions of Tian Hao and Chang Keng-yu, along with the return of Gaby, will be instrumental in restoring the team's former glory.
