Fujimori Starts Peruvian Presidency with 60% Approval, Poll Shows

Keiko Fujimori's presidency in Peru has begun with a solid 60% public approval rating, according to a recent survey by Datum. The poll, conducted nationwide, reveals that 24% of Peruvians disapprove of her initial actions, while 16% remain undecided.

Fujimori, who narrowly won the June 7 presidential runoff, is seeing her strongest support in the northern regions of the country, where she garners 66% approval. Support is also strong in Lima and Callao (64%), followed by the central (62%) and Amazonian (54%) regions. However, her approval dips to 44% in the southern part of Peru.

Overall, 62% of respondents expressed optimism about Peru's future, contrasting with 32% who feel pessimistic. Specifically, a significant majority trust Fujimori to drive private investment (71%), generate employment (66%), and improve the national economy (65%). Confidence is also high regarding her ability to restore order (62%), reduce crime (60%), and curb corruption (51%).

The survey also highlighted strong public backing for Fujimori's proposal to involve the armed forces in combating crime. An overwhelming 87% agree with deploying military personnel to support police efforts and patrol streets. Furthermore, 86% support the military leading security tasks in emergency zones, and 85% approve of them managing prison security.
