Gardaí renew appeal for information 35 years after murder of Sinn Féin Councillor Eddie Fullerton

Gardaí, Ireland's national police force, have issued a fresh appeal for information on the 35th anniversary of the murder of former Sinn Féin Councillor Eddie Fullerton. Fullerton, a father of six, was fatally shot at his home in Buncrana, County Donegal, on May 25, 1991, by four armed and masked intruders. The loyalist paramilitary group, the Ulster Defence Association, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The investigation into Fullerton's murder remains active and ongoing, directed by a Senior Investigating Officer. An Garda Síochána stated they continue to pursue all lines of inquiry and follow up on any received information. The investigation team expressed gratitude to those who have already provided valuable assistance and believe that some individuals may now be in a position to share information they could not previously disclose.

Authorities are particularly appealing to those who provided information at the time of the murder, suggesting they might now be able to offer further details. Any information provided will be treated with complete confidentiality. Earlier on the anniversary, a minute's silence was observed at the start of the monthly meeting of Donegal County Council in Lifford. A man arrested in connection with the murder in 2021 was later released without charge. Sinn Féin's Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn remembered Fullerton as a dedicated representative for the people of Buncrana and Donegal, noting his family's persistent pursuit of truth and justice.
