Gas Explosion Victim Transferred to Texas for Burn Treatment

A 15-year-old girl, critically injured in a liquefied petroleum gas (LP) tanker explosion in Cuernavaca, Morelos, has been airlifted to the Shriners Children's Texas in Galveston, USA, for specialized treatment of severe burns.

The medical transfer was confirmed by IMSS-Bienestar, which expressed gratitude to Shriners Children's Texas for the immediate admission of the victim following the accident in the Morelos capital. The transfer, which occurred last Saturday, was a joint effort involving the state government, which sought assistance from the Shriners Anezeh Foundation through its Morelos liaison, Ignacio Avelar Salgado, and IMSS-Bienestar.

Health authorities in Morelos reported that out of 16 individuals who required hospitalization due to the explosion, five have been released. The remaining 11 are under stable medical observation, receiving care both within Morelos and at specialized facilities outside the state. At IMSS Morelos, seven patients were treated; two were discharged, one was transferred to a trauma hospital in Mexico City, and four remain under observation.

Other patients received care at the General Hospital of Cuernavaca, where five were admitted, one discharged, three referred to the National Center for Research and Burn Treatment (CENIAQ), and one more is scheduled for transfer. At the General Hospital of Jiutepec, three individuals were treated, two discharged, and the 15-year-old girl was transferred to the U.S. An additional patient is receiving care at a private facility in Cuernavaca.

The international air transport was executed after medical personnel at the Jiutepec hospital stabilized the minor, ensuring the necessary life support for her journey to the high-specialty pediatric center. The explosion itself reportedly injured 20 people, according to initial reports.
