Heavy rains cause flooding, damage in Mazatlán; 16 reports of vehicle and home damage addressed

Mazatlán experienced severe disruption as heavy rains lashed the city, causing widespread flooding and damage. Access to the popular Faro viewpoint was temporarily closed following a landslide on the hillside. Emergency services were deployed to assist motorists stranded in six flooded streets and responded to sixteen separate reports of damage to vehicles and homes.

The downpour, which accumulated 156 millimeters of rain in just five hours, overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to significant water level increases in several key intersections. The municipal coordinator of Civil Protection, Oscar Roberto Osuna Tirado, reported that the army assisted in reaching drivers stuck in flooded areas. The situation necessitated the partial closure of Paseo del Centenario due to a landslide on its slope.

In a five-hour period, we had a rainfall accumulation of 156 millimeters, which caused water levels to rise in six city intersections.

Osuna Tirado detailed that the 16 reports from affected neighborhoods included damage to household belongings and vehicles parked outside residences. Additionally, five trees were uprooted, and damage to the electrical power supply system was reported, prompting notification to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for urgent repairs.

To manage the aftermath, a temporary shelter was opened for families displaced by the flooding. City service crews are actively working to clear accumulated garbage and debris from storm drains to improve water flow and prevent further blockages. The city is coordinating efforts to restore normalcy after the intense rainfall.
