Gennaro Gattuso Appointed New Lazio Coach

Gennaro Gattuso takes the helm at Lazio, officially announced as the club's new head coach on Tuesday. This appointment comes just two months after Gattuso resigned as the manager of the Italian national team, having failed to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The Roman club expressed confidence that Gattuso's "experience, professionalism, and determination" will help achieve their sporting goals. The 48-year-old Italian, affectionately known as 'Rino,' embarks on a new chapter in Serie A, inheriting the position from Maurizio Sarri. Gattuso's coaching journey began in 2013 with Swiss club Sion. He has since managed teams across Europe, including Palermo, OFI Crete, Pisa, AC Milan, and Napoli, where he secured his most significant coaching trophy, the Coppa Italia in 2020. His international coaching stint with Italy, which began in June 2025, ended in April of this year after failing to qualify for the World Cup, marking Italy's third consecutive absence from the tournament. During his eight games as national team manager, Italy recorded six wins and two losses. Lazio hopes Gattuso will provide much-needed continuity after a turbulent period on the bench. Sarri, who recently joined Atalanta, resigned in March 2024 and was briefly succeeded by Igor Tudor. Marco Baroni also had a short tenure before Sarri's return, which was hampered by financial restrictions. Gattuso faces the challenge amid tensions between the club's ultras and president Lotito, with some fans protesting the management.
