German Forests Suffer Under Prolonged Drought Conditions

German forests are facing severe stress due to persistent drought, according to the state-run Hessenforst. The dry conditions not only elevate the risk of wildfires but also critically weaken trees' health. "The trees are suffering physically from the heat and drought because a lack of water weakens metabolism, vitality, and defenses," the agency stated in response to a German Press Agency inquiry. Young trees and older, already weakened stands are particularly vulnerable to water scarcity. This leads to reduced growth, increased susceptibility to damage, and hinders reforestation efforts in affected areas. Visible signs include thinning crowns, dying branches, and in the most severe cases, the loss of entire forest stands. The drought also creates favorable conditions for pests. Weakened trees have diminished defenses, making them more prone to diseases and insect infestations, such as the mass reproduction of bark beetles observed in 2018. While spruce and beech have been notably affected in the past, all tree species are now vulnerable. Hessenforst is actively working to adapt forest composition by introducing more climate-resilient tree species to better withstand these changing conditions.
