Ghana Police kill two, arrest Nigerian over alleged bank robbery attempt

Ghanaian police announced on Thursday they killed two suspected robbers and arrested a Nigerian man, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, during an intelligence-led operation in Accra. The operation reportedly foiled a planned attack on banks in the Labone area, including GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank.

According to a police statement, officers were deployed after receiving intelligence about the gang's preparations. The statement claims suspects in two vehicles attempted to flee, with one vehicle leading to a chase where Maazi was arrested and another occupant escaped. A shootout occurred with occupants of a second vehicle, resulting in the deaths of two suspects.

The police recovered two vehicles and a blow pistol. Maazi is in custody assisting with the investigation, while a manhunt is underway for a fourth suspect who escaped. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for autopsy.

However, GCB Bank issued its own statement denying that its Labone branch was robbed or that an attempted robbery occurred on its premises. The bank asserted that neither its operations, customers, employees, nor property were affected.
