Ghana Ramps Up Waste Evacuation in Accra with New Measures

Ghana's government is taking swift action to stabilize Accra's sanitation situation, implementing a multi-pronged strategy to enhance waste evacuation and management following an incident on June 29. Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, outlined these interventions during an inspection of Zoomlion's Integrated Recycling & Compost Plant Limited (IRECOP).

A key development is the reactivation of waste management infrastructure, with five out of six Zoomlion Waste Transfer Stations now fully operational. This is complemented by plans to introduce a round-the-clock waste evacuation system in Jamestown. This initiative aims to address the existing backlog of waste and prevent future pile-ups, ensuring more efficient and continuous service delivery.

Furthermore, the government intends to formalize and integrate over 4,000 tricycle waste collectors into the national waste management framework. This move is expected to significantly improve last-mile collection services, ensuring that waste is collected effectively even from hard-to-reach areas. The minister commended the Jospong Group of Companies, Zoomlion's parent company, for its "swift intervention" in preventing a potential public health emergency.

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs will maintain close monitoring of all waste facilities to ensure the new measures yield immediate positive results for Accra's residents. The minister is scheduled to brief a Council of State Sub-Committee on the June 29 incident and the subsequent actions, and will also meet with the President for final discussions on the matter.
