Ghana's Breman Essiam to Celebrate Donkese Festival, Queenmother's 20th Anniversary

The Breman Essiam Traditional Area in Ghana is preparing to celebrate its annual Donkese Afahye festival, a significant cultural event that will also mark a milestone for its leader. This year's festivities will honor the 20th anniversary of the enstoolment of Queenmother Nana Efua Esiwaa II. A key objective of the celebration is to raise funds for the completion of the Nana Efua Esiwaa II Cultural Centre. This center, initiated by the queenmother using her private resources, was inaugurated in July 2020. Dignitaries expected to attend include former President John Dramani Mahama and Vice-President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, alongside other prominent figures. The festival's theme, "Esiaman on the path to greatness: Celebrating two decades of a Queenmother's dedicated leadership of service, sacrifice, wisdom and strength," underscores the queenmother's enduring impact. The "Donkese" festival, meaning "Sacred Bell," is an annual tradition held at the end of July to honor ancestral heritage and showcase the region's rich culture. Tradition holds that the sacred bell descended from heaven and is exhibited only during the festival, making it a unique tourist attraction. The Omanhene, Odeefuo Afankwa III, also used the occasion to urge the youth to focus on education and avoid social vices, emphasizing their role as future leaders.
