Ghana's tallest man dies at 33

Ghana's tallest man, Sulemana Abdul Samed, popularly known as Awuche, has died at the age of 33. His passing has led to widespread grief, especially in northern Ghana, where his remarkable height made him a beloved local figure.

Everyone knew how generous and kind he was. From when he died until now a lot of people are still coming to the house to find out what exactly happened.

Awuche died on Monday at the Tamale Teaching Hospital after being admitted with infected sores on his legs. He was receiving treatment in Tamale, a city in the northern region, approximately 160 kilometers from his native village of Gambaga. A relative, Sulemana Abdul Kudus, remembered Awuche as a generous and well-loved individual, noting the constant stream of visitors to his home since his death.

Diagnosed with gigantism in his 20s, Awuche measured 7 feet 4 inches (223 cm) in 2022. He lived with complications from Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting connective tissues, which caused his unusually long limbs. Doctors reported he was responding well to treatment for the leg sores, which were a complication of his condition, not directly caused by Marfan syndrome.

His medical expenses were supported by businessman Ibrahim Mahama, brother of former Ghanaian President John Mahama. Mahama had met Awuche and was involved in planning his medical care. Awuche's fame had put Gambaga on the map, with residents noting that his presence gave the community a distinct identity and made him popular.

Awuche's rapid growth began around age 22, forcing him to abandon his ambition of becoming a driver. He had previously told the BBC that his tongue had expanded, affecting his breathing, followed by the rest of his body's growth before his diagnosis.

Anywhere he found himself in the country and they asked him, he would say he is from Gambaga and people knew that was where the tallest man was from. It gave the community identity, and he was popular as well.
