Gill to captain India in Sri Lanka Tests, Bumrah's availability subject to fitness

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India's squad for an upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, appointing Shubman Gill as captain and KL Rahul as vice-captain. India will play a four-day practice match in Colombo before the Test series commences.

The first Test is scheduled from August 15 to 19 at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, followed by the second Test from August 23 to 27 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been included in the squad, but his participation is subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Similarly, B Sai Sudharsan's availability also depends on clearance from the COE.

Washington Sundar, a spin-bowling all-rounder, will be absent for the first Test due to a hamstring injury. Saransh Jain has received his maiden call-up to the Test side as Sundar's replacement. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja makes a return after recovering from a tennis elbow injury sustained during the 2026 Indian Premier League, bolstering India's spin attack.

The squad also features notable players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, and Devdutt Padikkal. This Test series is a part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. India currently holds fifth place in the WTC standings, with 52 points from nine matches, comprising four wins, four losses, and one draw.
