Malaysia to host one-off Bahrain GP as F1 preserves 2026 calendar

Malaysia is set to return to the Formula 1 calendar for the first time since 2017, hosting a unique Bahrain Grand Prix in October. This event fills the slot left vacant by the cancellation of the original Bahrain race amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The Sepang International Circuit, located near Kuala Lumpur, will stage the Grand Prix on October 4. This decision allows Formula 1 to maintain its planned 23-race calendar for the season. The race will officially be known as the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, acknowledging Bahrain's financial sponsorship despite the significant geographical distance.

Formula 1 stated that this arrangement ensures 23 races for the season, with the rest of the schedule remaining intact. The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, initially scheduled for April, were postponed in March due to regional tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. As regional tensions persisted, Formula 1 sought an alternative venue to fill the October gap.

An agreement was reached following discussions between Formula 1, the FIA, and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia. Bahrain is reportedly covering a substantial portion of the hosting costs. Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, a strong proponent of the country's Formula 1 involvement since 2004, significantly influenced this arrangement. Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund also holds a majority ownership in the McLaren Formula 1 team.

Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali highlighted the sport's adaptability in responding to unforeseen circumstances. He expressed delight in confirming Malaysia as the host and thanked the involved parties for facilitating the agreement.
