Global Governance Initiative marks first anniversary with five points of consensus

China’s Global Governance Initiative is marking its first anniversary with claims of broad international support and five principles presented as an alternative path for global cooperation.

President Xi Jinping launched the initiative on Sept. 1, 2025. Burkina Faso joined it early, and more than 60 countries took part in a meeting held at United Nations headquarters in New York in May. The initiative has also received support from more than 160 countries and organizations.

The initiative promotes sovereign equality, multilateralism, respect for international law, a human-centered approach and action-oriented policies. Its members said in May that the framework was consistent with the goals and principles of the United Nations.

Le Pays presents the initiative as especially relevant for countries that want to defend sovereignty and choose their own partners. It describes the framework as a source of hope in a world where power politics can displace dialogue, and links Burkina Faso’s participation to its stated preference for peace, justice and an independent state.
