Google Legend Departs After 27 Years; New AI Powerhouse Emerges

Jeff Dean, a foundational figure at Google for 27 years, is departing the tech giant to launch a new artificial intelligence startup named Discovery Loop. Widely recognized as one of the company's most significant individuals, Dean was instrumental in building the global computing infrastructure that powers Google Search and was an early leader in the company's AI research efforts.

In recent years, Dean's influence within Google appeared to wane as other executives, including co-founder Sergey Brin, took greater control of the company's expansive AI initiatives. Nevertheless, Dean remained one of the most important engineers responsible for developing key company technologies. His departure follows a trend of prominent AI researchers leaving Google.

Discovery Loop joins a growing number of startups aiming to achieve a long-standing goal in Silicon Valley: creating artificial intelligence capable of self-improvement with minimal or no human intervention. Dean and his colleagues believe this process, known as recursive self-improvement, could dramatically accelerate AI development. They suggest these techniques might also aid in designing new computer hardware, discovering drugs, creating materials, and speeding up other scientific research.

"We believe that AI can automate the experimental process to a much greater extent, which has historically required enormous human involvement," Dean said in an interview. Google is striving to match AI advancements from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Meanwhile, other notable researchers are leaving the tech giant, attracted by access to substantial venture capital and the opportunity to lead their own ventures. Google has lost several top scientists in the past year, including Peter Norvig, who led the company's research division for 25 years before joining Recursive Superintelligence, a startup focused on recursive self-improvement AI.
