Greece issues Red Code alert for very high wildfire risk across multiple regions

Greece is on high alert as a "Red Code" has been issued for Saturday, signaling a very high risk of wildfires across extensive areas of the country. The alert, classifying the fire risk at category 4, has placed regions including Attica, Crete, the Aegean islands, and parts of the Peloponnese, Central Greece, Macedonia, and Thrace on increased vigilance.

The decision comes as the daily Fire Risk Prediction Map team of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection forecasts a very high risk in these specific areas. The "Red Code" status mandates the full mobilization of the emergency mechanism, deploying necessary personnel and resources for immediate readiness to address potential emergencies.

In response, municipalities and regional authorities in the affected "Red Code" areas are called upon to convene local and regional operational coordination bodies for civil protection. These meetings will focus on all aspects of prevention, readiness, and response to potential forest fires. Authorities are on heightened alert, with weather conditions, particularly strong winds, maintaining a high risk of rapid fire development.
