Greece sizzles as heatwave peaks at 41.1°C; map shows hottest areas

Greece is grappling with a significant heatwave, as temperatures soared on Monday, July 20, with the mercury topping 41.1°C in multiple areas. The intense heat is sweeping across the country, creating challenging conditions for residents.

The highest temperatures were recorded in Riza Korinthias, Makrakomi Fthiotidas, and Oleni Ileias, according to the automatic weather station network of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr. The accompanying map illustrates the temperature distribution across Greece as of 5:30 PM local time, highlighting the extent of the heat.

Data from the network reveals that the daily maximum temperature exceeded 40°C at 24 stations, representing about 4% of the total. Furthermore, 159 stations, or approximately 28% of the network, recorded temperatures above 37°C, indicating a widespread and severe heat event.
