Greece: Two active fire fronts in Boeotia, strong winds hamper efforts

Firefighters are battling two significant blazes in Boeotia, Greece, with one fire raging uncontrollably near the settlement of Xironomi, prompting an evacuation order. A second fire has broken out in Kalamaki, a popular holiday settlement.

Strong winds, reaching up to 10-11 Beaufort, are severely complicating firefighting operations. While two helicopters are attempting to assist, the powerful gusts prevent the larger Canadair water-bombing aircraft from flying. Firefighters are facing constant flare-ups, highlighting the dangerous conditions.

Authorities have issued evacuation messages via the 112 emergency system for residents in affected areas, directing them to move towards safer locations. The police have also closed a section of the Thebes-Domvraina provincial road due to the fires. The causes of the blazes are under investigation by the Fire Crimes Investigation Unit.

In Kalamaki, 60 firefighters, supported by ground teams and 19 vehicles, are working to contain the fire. Naval assets, including a fireboat from Piraeus and a speedboat from Patras, have been mobilized to assist near the coastline. The Municipality of Thebes is also providing support with water tankers and construction machinery.
