Grlić Radman recalls historic Split Declaration: 'It was the foundation for Croatia's liberation'

Croatian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman commemorated the 31st anniversary of the Split Declaration, a pivotal agreement signed on July 22, 1995. He emphasized its foundational role in the military successes of Croatian forces during the final phase of the Croatian War of Independence.

Grlić Radman recalled that the declaration followed an appeal from then-Bosnian President Alija Izetbegović to Croatian President Franjo Tuđman, seeking assistance to prevent the fall of Bihać to a fate similar to Srebrenica. The minister stated that the declaration provided the essential political framework for Croatian military operations throughout 1995.

"The Split Declaration represented the basis for the military successes of Croatian forces during 1995, which resulted in the liberation of the largest part of the occupied territory of the Republic of Croatia, the collapse of the Serbian para-state of the Republic of Serbian Krajina, and the creation of preconditions for the establishment of lasting peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina," Grlić Radman stated.

The agreement is recognized as a crucial factor in liberating occupied Croatian territories, dismantling the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina, and paving the way for peace negotiations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
