Guardiola rejects Italy, Pirlo reportedly set to take charge

Andrea Pirlo is reportedly on the verge of becoming the new head coach of the Italian national football team, with reports suggesting a four-year contract agreement has been reached.

This development follows Pep Guardiola's reported rejection of the opportunity to lead the Azzurri. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is said to have pursued Guardiola, even offering a special package, but the former Manchester City manager chose to take a break from coaching after a decade-long successful tenure with the English club.

The potential appointment of Pirlo, a World Cup winner as a player, comes at a critical juncture for Italian football. The national team is grappling with a confidence crisis after failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time. Pirlo, who previously coached Juventus and won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, is now managing Dubai United in the UAE First Division League.

FIGC had also considered other prominent names like Carlo Ancelotti. However, Pirlo is seen as the most suitable candidate to forge a new identity for the Italian team, grounded in the nation's footballing culture and philosophy. The vacancy arose after Gennaro Gattuso resigned in April following the team's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
