Harimau Malaya starts ASEAN Cup with comeback win over Myanmar

Malaysia's national football team, Harimau Malaya, kicked off their ASEAN Cup 2026 Group B campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Myanmar in Yangon. The team demonstrated resilience, coming from behind to secure three crucial points on foreign soil.

Myanmar struck first in the 10th minute with a goal from Myat Kaung Khant, catching the Malaysian defense off guard. Despite the early setback, Malaysia, led by Paulo Josue in attack, pressed for an equalizer. Goalkeeper Zin Nyi Nyi Aung of Myanmar made several key saves, denying Malaysian winger G. Pavithran a goal in the 40th minute, ensuring the hosts maintained their 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Malaysia emerged with a more aggressive approach. Their efforts paid off in the 52nd minute when Josue netted the equalizer, marking his 10th goal for the national team. Five minutes later, Malaysia was awarded a penalty after a foul on Mohamadou Sumareh. Josue calmly converted the spot-kick in the 57th minute, giving Malaysia a 2-1 lead. The team's coach, Tan Cheng Hoe, made tactical substitutions to maintain offensive pressure. Although Myanmar pushed for an equalizer late in the game, Malaysia's defense held firm, securing the win. The victory sets Malaysia up for their next match against Laos at home, while Myanmar faces the Philippines.
