Health Care Assistant Sentenced for Sharing Degrading Patient Photos

A health care assistant has been sentenced to a two-year probation order and 100 hours of community service for taking and sharing degrading images of vulnerable patients. Ciara Corvan, 28, appeared at Craigavon Crown Court on Monday, July 27, 2026, where she admitted to seven offenses related to the ill-treatment or neglect of patients.

The offenses occurred between October 2022 and November 2023 at the Bluestone Dementia Unit in Craigavon Area Hospital. The victims, two women and two men, were all patients under Corvan's care and had advanced dementia. This case marks the first prosecution of its kind in Northern Ireland, highlighting a serious breach of trust within a healthcare setting.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Patrick McGurgan was informed that Corvan had penned a letter of apology to the families of her victims. Her legal representative stated that she was profoundly remorseful for the pain and suffering caused. Relatives of the victims were present in court as the judge delivered the sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Corvan's actions.

The judge told Corvan, "You were in a position of trust, employed to take care of some of the most vulnerable people in this society." He added that families expect their loved ones to be treated with dignity and respect, but Corvan had instead committed a serious breach of that trust, degrading individuals unable to defend themselves. The court heard how she had photographed and videotaped patients, sharing the material with colleagues while mocking them. Her actions led to her suspension after her colleagues reported her behavior. Victim impact statements revealed the deep distress and sense of betrayal felt by the families towards the health care system.
