Jukka Ohtonen, a licensed healthcare professional and researcher, passed away in Tampere on July 18, 2026, at the age of 76. Born in Kajaani on December 19, 1949, Ohtonen dedicated his professional life to understanding the intricacies of Finnish healthcare.

Ohtonen earned a Master of Social Sciences from the University of Tampere and spent his entire career examining the structures, operations, and costs of the Finnish healthcare system. He actively participated in national and regional development initiatives and was a long-standing member of a multidisciplinary research community at the University of Tampere's Department of Public Health, where he completed his licensing thesis and cultivated his professional network.

Described as an independent expert and entrepreneur, Ohtonen chose self-employment over potential official positions. He was passionate about his work, conducting research, educating healthcare students, publishing textbooks, and engaging in public discourse. A colleague recalled his independent spirit, noting that Ohtonen "did what he wanted." He took pride in his professional accomplishments and was not shy about discussing them.

Ohtonen resided in Tampere and served for many years as the chairman of his housing company's board. During his tenure, a significant renovation project was completed, including the replacement of roofs and elevators, and the addition of two new floors to the building. He had a deep affection for Tampere, particularly its city center, and rarely ventured far from the grid-patterned downtown area. His favorite hobby was photography, with Tampere in all its seasonal beauty being his preferred subject.

Friends remember Jukka Ohtonen as a helpful and generous individual, though sometimes described as stubborn. Even as a difficult illness weakened him, he continued to live life as usual, without complaint. He adapted to using a walking stick and then a walker when necessary but remained active. He was characterized by his unfailingly good humor, never losing his temper, speaking ill of others, or even cursing. He was, by all accounts, a cheerful soul.
