Heat dome expands across the central United States

A dangerous heat dome has settled over the central United States, bringing scorching temperatures and widespread heat advisories to an estimated 80 million people. The oppressive weather, stretching from the desert Southwest to the Great Plains and up into the Midwest, is forecast to persist through the week.

Atmospheric conditions are trapping heat, creating sustained high temperatures and dangerously high overnight lows that prevent recovery. This accumulating heat stress is exacerbated by high humidity, making the conditions feel even more severe. Forecasters predict temperatures will remain 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit above normal in many affected regions.

In western Nebraska, where temperatures were expected to reach 108 F, the Museum of the Fur Trade saw fewer visitors. "I’m sure no one would be willing to wear it on a day like this," said museum employee Hannah Lovelace, referring to the shop's fur hats. Meanwhile, HVAC technician Kristian "Flaco” Santos described the work on sweltering rooftops and attics as "brutal," noting the physical toll of constant exposure to extreme heat.

Record-breaking highs are also anticipated in areas like Las Vegas, while normally moderate regions in Montana and Wyoming could see temperatures exceed 100 F. The National Weather Service has issued extreme heat warnings for affected areas, urging caution as the heat wave shows no immediate signs of breaking.
