Viveros de Coyoacán park closed after heavy rains cause flooding

Mexico City's Viveros de Coyoacán National Park has been temporarily closed following intense rainfall that has saturated the ground and caused flooding within the park's facilities. The Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) announced the closure on Saturday, August 8.

Semarnat, led by Alicia Bárcena, cited the recent heavy rains as the reason for the precautionary closure. The primary goal is to safeguard the safety of visitors and to facilitate necessary sanitation, drainage, and phytosanitary inspections of the park's trees. The authority stated that updates on the park's conditions would be provided on the same day.

This marks the second time this year that Viveros de Coyoacán has been closed due to rain-related issues. A previous precautionary closure occurred on May 13 when heavy rains caused critical increases in the water levels of the San Buenaventura and Magdalena rivers. In recent days, various areas of Mexico City have experienced significant rainfall, leading to flooding, fallen trees, and structural damage in several boroughs.
