Heavy rains flood parts of Taichung, Taiwan; waters recede quickly

Taichung, Taiwan – Intense afternoon downpours on Monday triggered widespread flooding across parts of Taichung, Taiwan, disrupting daily life and inundating several areas.

The Fengyuan district experienced severe flooding, with drainage systems overwhelmed by the sudden deluge. Residents shared images on social media showing water overflowing onto roads, particularly on Nanyang Road. In the Tanzhi district, vegetable and fruit vendors found their stalls submerged in ankle-deep water.

Similar conditions were reported in the Fengzhou Road area of Shengang District, where residents struggled with the rising water levels. The Taichung City Fire Bureau confirmed that the sudden heavy rain caused multiple roads to flood.

However, officials noted that the floodwaters receded rapidly. The Fengyuan District Chief, Hong Feng-ming, stated that while roads like Fengyuan Avenue and Nanyang Road experienced temporary flooding, and drainage channels in Beiyang Village overflowed, the water levels quickly returned to normal, and no significant damage or emergencies were reported.

Data from the Taichung City Water Resources Bureau indicated that Fengyuan received 106mm of rain in 24 hours, with Tanzhi receiving 94.5mm, marking the heaviest rainfall in those areas.
