Heavy rains flood southern Mexico City, overflow river Magdalena

Southern Mexico City faced significant disruptions as heavy rains caused widespread flooding and severe water accumulation on Friday afternoon. The Magdalena River overflowed its banks, contributing to the deluge in areas like Periférico Sur and Boulevard de La Luz, where water levels made driving hazardous.

Residents shared images on social media showing the extent of the flooding, with water reaching high levels on roadways. Areas in Tlalpan and Ajusco also reported substantial water buildup. The Secretariat of Integral Water Management (Segiagua) confirmed it was addressing water accumulation in several locations, including Calzada de Tlalpan and Huipulco.

The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) reported that three vehicles became stranded in an 80-meter long, 80-centimeter deep inundation in the Colinas del Ajusco neighborhood. Emergency personnel, working with local residents, removed the vehicles and cleared accumulated garbage from the site.

Alerts were issued for the affected areas, with Magdalena Contreras placed on red alert due to persistent heavy rain and potential hail. Álvaro Obregón, Coyoacán, Cuajimalpa, and Tlalpan remained on orange alert, while other districts were on yellow alert. A fallen tree in the Narvarte neighborhood damaged a parked car but caused no injuries.
