Helsinki bridge expansion joints repaired after cyclist accident

Repairs have been carried out on the expansion joints of the Kruunuvuorensilta bridge in Helsinki, which had caused issues for cyclists.

The slope of the joint has been made longer, so the bevel is not as steep as before.

The repair work took place overnight, requiring the bridge to be closed. The modifications focused on the angled edges of the joint covers, making the slope less steep. Previously, the joints had a more abrupt angle, which has now been altered to improve safety.

These expansion joints are a necessary feature of the bridge, designed to allow for the natural expansion and contraction of the structure due to temperature changes. However, they became a point of concern after a serious cycling accident occurred on the bridge in April, shortly after its opening.

Additionally, the counter-bevel that was on the plate has been completely removed. Before, the plates had a sort of dip, now it's one step.

Following the accident, additional safety measures such as warning markings, reflectors, and signs were installed. The recent repairs aim to further mitigate risks associated with the joints. While the joints cannot be made completely flat due to their functional requirement, the adjustments are intended to create a safer passage for cyclists. Finishing touches are still ongoing.
