Highway heist ends in deadly shootout with Egyptian police

A brazen highway robbery of a truck carrying frozen poultry concluded in a fatal shootout with Egyptian security forces, resulting in the deaths of three suspects and the arrest of three others, according to the Interior Ministry.

The incident occurred on August 25, 2026, on the Cairo-Ismailia Desert Road. The suspects, identified as a six-member criminal gang, allegedly used a green pickup truck to pursue the moving poultry truck. They then climbed onto the vehicle while it was in motion, forced open the rear doors, and stole boxes of frozen poultry before attempting to flee.

Footage capturing the dramatic robbery, filmed by a motorist, circulated widely on social media, drawing significant public attention. Investigators tracked the suspects to several hideouts in Cairo and Qalyubia. When security forces attempted to apprehend them, the suspects reportedly opened fire, initiating a gun battle.

During the exchange of gunfire, three suspects were killed, and the remaining three were apprehended. Authorities recovered the green pickup truck, two automatic rifles, a shotgun, and the stolen poultry. The arrested suspects now face charges including armed robbery, illegal weapons possession, and firing at security forces, and have been referred to the Public Prosecution.
