Higüey's mobile classrooms delayed, won't be ready for school start

Mobile classrooms, envisioned as a solution to Higüey's school capacity deficit, will not be available when classes begin on August 24. Iván Castro, regional director of School Infrastructure for Yuma, explained that the four projects aimed at expanding educational capacity are slated for completion between late September and mid-October.

Castro noted that while the mobile units themselves don't require conventional structures, the land must be prepared to ensure proper installation. Some sites need cutting and leveling, and in certain cases, retaining walls are necessary to correct uneven terrain. Work is progressing in Villa Cerro and Sajul, where land preparation and material delivery are underway for two educational spaces in Sajul.

The mobile classroom model was initially conceived as a short-term fix for the shortage of school places, following a successful pilot program last year. Higüey had planned for five projects, but one in the southern zone was stalled by difficulties in finding suitable land. The scarcity of available plots is a significant obstacle to developing new educational centers in the province, particularly in Higüey and Verón, as suitable land must be secured before construction contracts can be awarded.
