Historic cold records broken in the capital: highs dropped 15 degrees below normal average

Romania has been hit by unusually cold weather, with historical temperature records shattered on July 22. A polar air mass descended upon the country, causing temperatures to plummet by as much as 15 degrees Celsius below the typical average for late July.

In the capital, Bucharest, the day's maximum temperatures failed to surpass 18°C, setting new records for July 22. Specifically, Bucharest-Băneasa recorded 17.4°C, falling short of the previous record of 21.5°C. Bucharest-Filaret registered 18°C, down from its old record of 20.6°C, and Bucharest-Afumați reached 17.9°C, a significant drop from its previous record of 22.4°C for the date.

These frigid conditions followed a stark contrast just one day earlier, on July 21, when maximum temperatures in the capital had approached 30°C. The dramatic temperature swing highlights the volatility of the current weather patterns affecting the region.

Other cities across Romania also experienced significantly low temperatures. Notable readings included Brașov at 15.9°C, Joseni at 16.2°C, Miercurea-Ciuc at 16.9°C, Urziceni at 17.2°C, Buzău at 17.5°C, and Piatra Neamț at 17.9°C.

While the low temperatures were widespread, the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) noted that the absolute historical minimums for July were not surpassed. On the morning of July 23, thermometers dipped as low as 8°C in locations like Lăpușna, Pătârlagele, and Buzoiești.
