Ho Chi Minh City Accelerates Metro Line 2 Construction, Prepares for Tunnel Boring Machines

Construction is in full swing at the Le Thi Rieng underground metro station in Ho Chi Minh City, a critical component of the city's Metro Line 2 project connecting Ben Thanh and Tham Luong. Workers are actively engaged in various tasks, including steel cutting, welding, and operating machinery, preparing the site for the next major phase.

The construction site has been busy for nearly a month, but traffic has not been congested because it has been well-arranged.

The station, located on Cach Mang Thang Tam Street, is set to become a key launch point for two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). These specialized machines are expected to be lowered into the ground in August 2027, marking the beginning of the tunnel excavation for the underground sections of the line. The TBM technology is designed to efficiently bore through diverse geological conditions, a common practice in urban rail projects worldwide.

Local residents, like taxi driver Mr. Dung, observe the construction's progress. He notes that despite the ongoing work, traffic flow has been managed effectively through organized diversions, with only occasional congestion. Mr. Dung expressed optimism that the completed metro line will significantly enhance public transportation and be widely welcomed by the city's inhabitants.

When Metro Line 2 is completed, travel for residents will be more convenient, and the project will be welcomed by many people.

Metro Line 2 is a vital urban transport initiative for Ho Chi Minh City, spanning over 11 kilometers and featuring 10 underground stations, one elevated station, and a depot. The project has been extended to include a direct connection with Ben Thanh Station on Metro Line 1, creating an important interchange within the city's developing rail network. Officials anticipate that the TBMs will commence tunnel construction in August 2027, advancing the project towards its completion.

The design of the two stations prioritized for early implementation (Phạm Văn Bạch and Lê Thị Riêng stations) has been completed. It is expected that around August 2027, the project will lower two TBMs to begin constructing the underground tunnel sections.
