Ho Chi Minh City Bus Stops Neglected, Encroached Upon

Ho Chi Minh City's ambitious push to promote public transportation, underscored by the recent introduction of free bus fares, is being severely undermined by the deplorable state of its bus waiting points. A recent inspection revealed that many stops, from the city center to the outskirts, have been shamefully neglected and are now unusable.

Instead of serving as safe havens for commuters, these waiting areas have been transformed into makeshift marketplaces for street vendors, dumping grounds for household waste, and even obscured by commercial signage. This blatant encroachment not only creates an unsightly urban landscape but, more critically, poses significant safety risks. Passengers are often forced to stand in the street, dangerously close to traffic, particularly during peak hours. The lack of cleanliness and basic amenities makes the waiting experience unpleasant and undignified, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly and students.

As Thanh Niên has observed, this situation directly contradicts the city's stated goals of encouraging greater bus ridership. If the fundamental infrastructure—the bus stops themselves—cannot provide a safe, clean, and accessible environment, then the policy of free fares will struggle to achieve its intended impact. The city administration, through entities like the Public Transport Management Center, has acknowledged the need for infrastructure upgrades and network adjustments. However, concrete actions are urgently needed to reclaim these public spaces and ensure they serve their intended purpose, thereby fostering genuine trust and convenience in the public transit system.
