Ho Chi Minh City invests over 3.8 trillion dong in new classrooms before school year starts

Ho Chi Minh City is making a substantial investment in its educational infrastructure, preparing to open 1,044 new classrooms and 809 additional ones before the commencement of the 2026-2027 academic year. This significant expansion represents a total investment of approximately 3.848 trillion dong (around $150 million USD).

The initiative is part of a broader campaign, "150 days and nights to complete 1,000 classrooms," aimed at bolstering educational capacity. As of August 20, 49 out of 53 planned projects were completed, resulting in 930 new classrooms, which is about 89% of the target for new classrooms to be ready by September 5. Additionally, 695 of the planned 809 additional classrooms have also been finished.

This expansion comes at a crucial time as the city anticipates a considerable rise in its student population. Projections indicate an increase of over 96,000 students for the upcoming academic year, bringing the total student count to more than 2.6 million across all levels, from preschool to high school. The largest increases are expected in preschool and high school education.

In addition to the new facilities, the city's Department of Education and Training is ensuring the availability of textbooks and preparing for the national school opening ceremony on September 5. The department has coordinated with publishers and bookstores to guarantee sufficient supply and has provided guidance to schools on textbook distribution and lending programs.
