Home Affairs Minister: Regional Leaders' Integrity Key to Preventing Local Government Corruption

Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian has emphasized that the integrity of regional leaders is the most crucial factor in preventing corruption within local governments. He expressed concern over the number of regional heads facing legal action for corruption, urging them to learn from these cases and strengthen their personal integrity.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) is reinforcing its commitment to corruption prevention in local administrations, aligning with Law No. 23 of 2014 on Regional Government. The ministry provides corruption prevention and integrity training during initial retreats for newly appointed regional leaders. To enhance these efforts, Kemendagri is working with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the Financial and Development Supervisory Board (BPKP) through the Monitoring Center for Prevention (MCP).

We really emphasize that our regional heads learn from the existing experiences. These cases that are enforced or acted upon by law enforcers are a real warning to strengthen each individual's integrity.

Further initiatives include optimizing the Regional Government Information System (SIPD), strengthening the ASN BerAKHLAK values, and conducting regular monitoring of regional heads. In response to ongoing corruption cases, Kemendagri, alongside the KPK, is launching a roadshow to 10 regional clusters. This initiative, which has already included a visit to Papua led by Deputy Home Affairs Minister Ribka Haluk and KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto, aims to engage regional heads, deputy heads, DPRD leaders, regional secretaries, and heads of key departments like public works, education, health, finance, and procurement.

And in the future, we will visit 10 points, places, which will be attended by regional heads, deputy regional heads, then also their DPRD, DPRD leadership, then also the Regional Secretary, the leadership of regional apparatus, especially those in charge of public works, education, health, finance, assets, procurement of goods and services, government management, human resource management, ASN, public services.
